GOD’S AWESOME LOVE TO THE WORLD

Key Text: John 3:16For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Introduction:

To understand the passage it might help if we put it in the context of the world's greatest demonstration of love, God's gift — His Son. Ephesians speaks of four specific dimensions. What are the width and length and depth and height of His love? Each of these dimensions can be seen in a verse many people can quote, but don't really "lay hold of." That verse is John 3:16

Taken in phrases, this familiar verse demonstrates and defines the four dimensions of which Paul speaks.

  1. The Four Dimensions of God’s love – Ephesians 3:14-21

1.1. The width

The width of God’s love is embedded in the phrase, “For God so loved the world.” One cannot begin to describe God in physical terms. Suffice it to say that the width of God's love is so broad that when Jesus stretched out His arms on the cross He encompassed the entire universe, even me . . . even you.

1.2. The length

The length is represented in the phrase, "That He gave His only begotten Son." Think about it this way. If someone who had shown contempt for you needed a heart transplant, would you take your son to the hospital and say, "Take my son's heart and give it to him"? Imagine a love that is so forgiving that it gives up the very thing it loves the most. That is what God did for even me . . . even you.

1.3. The depth

The depth is represented in the phrase "whoever believes." The people around the foot of the cross did not understand that the death they were watching meant life. Certainly, they didn't seize the concept of life for Jews, Gentiles, or the "whoever" of the world. But, the reality was and is that death meant life for even me . . . even you.

1.4. The Height

The height is represented in the phrase, "everlasting life." This life they would later come to understand was not just some earthly carnal form. Its very nature would be eternal. But, the height would not be contained in some life form. You can only "lay hold" of the height when you realize that this life is a personal, permanent relationship with Christ, Himself. In other words: For God loved YOU so much that He gave His only begotten Son that YOU might have everlasting life.

  1. God’s nature is love. God is nothing and knows nothing but love.

God’s love is beyond human comprehension.

2.1. 1 John 4:8

  1. The object of His love – Romans 8:32

3.1. Fallen mankind – He who did not spare His Son, but delivered Him up for us

all…

3.2. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23

  1. For what purpose?

4.1. Whoever believes in Him shall not perish but enjoy eternal life

4.2. Only the person who accepts Jesus as His personal Savior can come out of common grace and enter a sanctifying and saving grace.

4.3. The person who experiences this satisfying and saving grace is antidote of the second death and this second death we are immunized against is everlasting death .

  1. Conclusion

God loved you and me so much that He gave what He possessed best: His one and only Son. He gave the best of all and gave the best he knew how. In Christ is imbedded all divine gifts. There are all in One! What is your response to this great love? The only thing God requires of us in exchange of His selfless love is our hearts.

He says, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:11

John 13:34,35 – A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

John 17: 20,21 – “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.

May the Almighty God help us to love as he loved. This is the only prerequisite to enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:48

WHAT OTHER EVIDENCES DO WE NEED TO BELIEVE?

In Luke 23:44-49 we are given an account of Jesus dying on the cross for the sins of the world. Three unusual things happened from the sixth hour to the ninth hour, in modern time language telling, from 12pm to 3pm. First of all, the earth was totally engulfed in complete darkness. Secondly, the sun was darkened and could not shine. Thirdly, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom so that people could see in the most holy place of the sanctuary. These things were unusual. No other person had died in circumstances like these. People never posed to wonder why such events could precede the dying of the Man of the cross.

God gave these evidences so that the throng of people who were mocking, mistreating and scolding Jesus may know that He really is the Son of God. When the hour had come, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit." After uttering this, the King and the Creator of the universe breathed His last.

The crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. They did not believe that Jesus was the Son of God. But the Roman centurion who witnessed what had happened, glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous Man!"

As draw near the second coming of Jesus, many things are happening around and before our very eyes. People hear the rumblings in economic sphere, stocks are tumbling every day, the rise of criminality, the rampage of greed everywhere. Yet, people still are entrenched in their unbelief. God is sending wake-up calls everywhere but no seems to pay heed to what is going on. What other convincing evidences do we need to know that Jesus ' return is imminent? Whether you believe or not HE IS COMING AGAIN! Amen.

In the election of Barack Obama, as our nation’s first black president, we all made history together. Irrespective of our political convictions or party loyalties, we collectively share this historic moment. And while the painful story of slavery is permanently woven into the tapestry of our country’s four hundred year history, the decision of American voters in this election provides us all—black and white, young and old, rich and poor, educated and illiterate, believer and non-believer—the unprecedented opportunity to now write a new story of racial reconciliation. For that is the will of Christ. “‘So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples’” (John 13:34, 35 NLT).

And it also is the will of God that we join hands in fervent prayers for our new president-elect. On the morning after the election, Peter Baker wrote in the New York Times: “No president since before Barack Obama was born has ascended to the Oval Office confronted by the accumulation of seismic challenges awaiting him. Historians grasping for parallels point to Abraham Lincoln taking office as the nation was collapsing into Civil War, or Franklin D. Roosevelt arriving in Washington in the throes of the Great Depression” (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/05/us/politics/05ahead.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin). Surely our new leader, young and untested, desires the fervent intercessions and prayers of churches and synagogues and mosques across this land. The Bible commands this moral duty: “Pray this way for kings and all others who are in authority, so that we can live in peace and quietness, in godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, for he wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth” (I Timothy 2:2-4 NLT).

Note carefully the apostle’s rationale for our prayers—not for the cause of political success, but rather we are to pray for the sake of the divine mission to save lost humanity in this generation! For this is the “primetime generation.” In this election, you who are young have shown us the political influence you can wield. Now I earnestly appeal to you to show us the spiritual impact you can have, not on a single nation, but on an entire planet! You were born for this hour—which is why, more than the government, the church needs you. Lead us in a radical following after Jesus “into all the world”—and I promise you, the church will follow in your steps. For as history will show, you are the greatest leaders to emerge from this election.

SAVED BY GRACE

John relates in Revelation 7:9-14 that, after seeing the 144,000 sealed from all the tribes of Israel, he looked and there before him was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice:
"Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb."

All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying:
"Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.

Then one of the elders asked me, "These in white robes - who are they, and where did they come from?"

I answered, "Sir, you know."

And he said, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

The redeemed are in heaven not because of their merit but because of God's grace. Some of them were murderers, adulterers, fornicators, thieves, liars; others experienced broken relationships. At last, they are in heaven. They are there not because of they have done but because of what Jesus has done on the cross of Calvary; they are there not because of what they are but because of who God is. A timeless, self-existent, loving and merciful God. The only thing they did to be in heaven was to accept God's white robes, a symbol of God's immaculate character to cover their filthiness. My dear fellow pilgrim, do not yield to discouragement due to the sinful plight you are in now. Jesus is on the front porch waiting for you. He wants to offer you a white robe washed in His blood. He wants to change you and count you among the multitude of the redeemed from all ages. Now is the time to accept Jesus' gracious offer. Tomorrow may be too late! Saved only by God's grace!

Has Wall street become a four-letter word?

October 1, 2008

wallstreet.jpgHas Wall Street become a four-letter word? The headline for Jeff Cox’s report on CNBC’s home page earlier this week caught my eye: “As Bailout Looms, Fear is Market’s Biggest Problem.” His piece opened with these words: “The government rescue plan may help cure some of the ills that are afflicting the banking industry, but it’s unlikely to remedy Wall Street’s greatest malady right now: fear. . . . ‘People are confused and they are scared. Baby boomers are remembering what their parents told them about the Depression and they’re afraid they’ll be next,’ says Kathy Boyle, president of Chapin Hill Advisors in New York. ‘Everybody’s worried about their money, everybody’s worried about their future, everybody’s worried about whether their retirement is safe.’” (http://www.cnbc.com/id/26942317/)

Just four letters long, but how iron-fisted its grip: f-e-a-r. Unfortunately, however, the alphabet soup of this nation’s and world’s financial crisis is about more than fear. Truth be told, that four-letter word is the byproduct of a five-letter word: g-r-e-e-d. Nearly to a man and woman, commentators have recognized that what has driven us to the brink of this credit market crisis has been the wanton scramble for fees, pay-backs and quick profits from the credit industry’s calculated generation of toxic subprime “wink and nod” mortgages, sold to gullible first-time buyers, who played the same silly game by inflating their own financial worth in hope of acquiring that coveted “American dream,” their own home.

Thus we all have been led straight into the lair of this six-letter reality: c-r-i-s-i-s. Let this crisis go on long enough and we shall eventually reap its baleful seven-letter harvest: d-e-s-p-a-i-r. And that is the stuff of our grandparents’ once-upon-a-time Great Depression sagas.

But enough of this toxic alphabet soup. For in an ancient prediction Jesus made are both the poison and the remedy. He prophesied the toxin in the human stream just before his return: “‘People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world.’” But as quick as his prediction comes his promise: “‘Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near’” (Luke 21:26, 28 NRSV). For the toxin of fear Christ offers the promise of hope—two poles-apart four letter words.

We’ve been getting plenty of the first through the news media of late. Isn’t it the right time that we imbibe on hope instead? Hope in Bernacke, Paulson, Bush, McCain and Obama? No. Hope and confidence in this same Jesus who promised that in an unraveling world of fear we would find the compelling sign of his soon return. And who better to be looking for than the Savior who wrote the alphabet of hope in the first place!

IT'S NOT TIME TO LOOK DOWN BUT UP

Do not invest your hope in a man and his ingenuity. President Bush, a few months ago in his prime-time televised address to the nation asserted that the country was experiencing a mere economy slowdown and not a recession. Capitalizing on ingenuity of American people, he assured the audience and viewers that the economy will pick up without delay. Nevertheless, things changed tremendously ever since as the economic situation worsened day by day. Addressing the nation again about the financial bailout of $700 billions on 9/23/2008 he told his prime-time audience and viewers across the country that the economy was on the blink of collapsing; $700 billions were needed immediately to bail out defaulting investment banks.

The White House, the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve Bank endeavor to convince the American people and world that, with this bailout, things will better, the economy will pick up for the good of all of us. They ignore that tomorrow is not ours. It belongs only to God Almighty. This is the admonition of the Apostle James to people who boat about tomorrow,"Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year, carry on business and make money. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that". As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins."' James 4:13-17

The country has been caught up in a web of internal and external debt. The budget deficit grows bigger everyday. With the collapse of housing industry, the American dream so long cherished sinks in oblivion. Millions of homeowners are losing their houses to foreclosures. Businesses are closing down, the rate of unemployment is galloping. Hopes invested in capitalism as the sole working and viable economic system model began dwindling. Many remedies are being proposed to bail out the economy in terminal stage. As the world has become a global village so has the world economy. It is so interlinked that a failure in one country such as the United States everything else crumbles. It’s like a card castle. You take out one card the whole castle falls apart. The stake is too high for both the domestic and world economies.

Could this be the end of Wall Street and capitalism as economic system? It transpires from Jesus’ prediction recorded in Luke 21:25-28 that prior to His coming there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken…Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near. The solution to the problem we are facing cannot be found in the most prestigious reference books on economics shelved at the US Treasury Department and at Federal Reserve Bank but in the Bible whose the acronym is: Brief Instructions Before Leaving Earth. God has the answer. His unlimited and incommensurable knowledge permits Him to know the end from the beginning. He predicts the future without fault. If the world leaders would not trust their human incapacity to solve the problem they would heed Jesus’ advice and look up. The answer cannot come from earth but from heaven.

Warning rich greedy oppressors, the Apostle James said,"Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvfesters hace reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you." James 5:1-6

In the article “The End of Wall Street” published in The Wall Street Journal dated 9/24/2008, the Morgan Stanley spokeswoman uttered the following words, “The world had changed and you can mark that down as the understatement of the year. According to the Wall Street Journal which reported her, she was explaining the company’s decision late Sunday night to convert back into aa bank holding company some 75 years after the Glass-Steagall act sundered the House of Morgan into J.P. Morgan, the bank, and Morgan Stanley, the investment firm. Under pressure from the Federal Reserve Bank, Goldman Sachs made the same choice this weekend.

And so, reported the Wall Street Journal, in a single week, the era of the independent investment bank has ended. Wall Street as we’ve known it for decades has ceased to exist. Six months ago, says the same Journal, there were five major investment banks. Two – Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns – have failed, Merrill Lynch is selling itself to Bank of America, and now the last two are becoming commercial banks… This year’s market turmoil, concludes the Journal, had called into question the viability of the investment-banking business model as far back as March, with Bear Stearns’s collapse. The Fed gave the remaining banks access to emergency lending, but it was clear from the start that this taxpayer lifeline wasn’t sustainable without a greater degree of federal oversight.

The words penned by the prophet Daniel under divine inspiration tell us unequivocally that the world system stained with sin must come to an end. The prophet says, “And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.” Daniel 2:44-45

The events that are taking place around us in all aspects of life: social, economic, military, diplomatic, moral, just to mention a few are but prompting us to the climax of the world history. Jesus is coming to establish His kingdom of genuine equal opportunity and justice for all and do away with a greed based capitalism which has impoverished millions and enriched just a cream of the society. There is an urgent need for a new world order, Christ-centered and not man-centered. Let's all the pilgrims join the Apostle John the beloved in uttering, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!"

Government rules on behalf of Catholic Church; bus, gas stations exempt

Source: Adventist News Network

print

The Croatian Parliament ruled in July that stores must close on Sundays, an act carried out in deference to the wishes of the Roman Catholic Church. The law will go into effect Jan. 1, 2009.

The Catholic Church makes up 90 percent of Croatia's religious population, and the Associated Press reports the church has made its presence felt in the Croatian government with continued lobbying for the passing of Sunday legislation.

The law permits stores in gas, bus and train stations to remain open on Sundays throughout the year. Other business, such as bakeries, newsstands and flower shops are not included in the ban. The Sunday shopping ban is also lifted during the summer and for winter holidays.

Local Adventist church leaders expressed concern over the ruling. Sretko Kuburic, secretary for the church in the Adriatic region, said while the legislation could have future consequences, the law shouldn't be viewed as the end of civil liberties. Kuburic also said the church should continue to monitor the situation after the law takes effect in 2009.

The Adventist Church has supported religious liberty around the world since it launched what is now the International Religious Liberty Association in 1893. The organization has grown into the world's largest forum on religious freedom.

Currently, about 3,000 Adventists live in Croatia, a nation of 4.5 million people.

"AT THE END OF YOUR ROPE" MATTHEW 5:3-10

"You are blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.
You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
You're blessed when you're content with just who you are -no more, no less. That's the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can't be bought.
You're blessed when you've worked up a good appetite for God. He's food and drink in the best meal you'll ever eat.
You're blessed when you care. At the moment of being `care-full,' you find yourself cared for.
You're blessed when you get your inside world -your mind and your heart -put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.
You're blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That's when you discover who you really are, and your place in God's family.
You're blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God's kingdom." [THE MESSAGE]

"How blest are those who know their need of God; the kingdom of God is theirs.
How blest are the sorrowful; they shall find consolation.
How blest are those of a gentle spirit; they shall have the earth for their possession.
How blest are those who hunger and thirst to see right prevail; they shall be satisfied.
How blest are those who show mercy; mercy shall be shown to them.
How blest are those whose hearts are pure; they shall see God.
How blest are the peacemakers; God shall call them his sons.
How blest are those who have suffered persecution for the cause of right; the kingdom of
Heaven
is theirs." [THE NEW ENGLISH BIBLE].

"Blessed (happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous -with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the poor in spirit (the humble, who rate themselves insignificant), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!
Blessed and enviably happy [with a happiness produced by the experience of God's favor and especially conditioned by the revelation of His matchless grace] are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted! [Isa. 61:2].
Blessed (happy, blithesome, joyous, spiritually prosperous -with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the meek (the mild, patient, long suffering), for they shall inherit the earth! [Ps. 37:11.]
Blessed and fortunate and happy and spiritually prosperous (in that state in which the born-again child of God enjoys His favor and salvation) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God), for they shall be completely satisfied! [Isa. 55:1,2.]
Blessed (happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous -with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy!
Blessed (happy, enviably fortunate, and spiritually prosperous -possessing the happiness produced by the experience of God's favor and especially conditioned by the revelation of His grace, regardless of their outward conditions) are the pure in heart, for they shall see God! (Ps. 24:3).
Blessed (enjoying enviable happiness, spiritually prosperous -with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they shall be called the sons of God!
Blessed and happy and enviably fortunate and spiritually prosperous (in the state in which a born again child of God enjoys and finds satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of his outward conditions) are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake (for being and doing right), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!" WHY THE CHURCH APPEARS TO BE WEAK. WHAT DID THE APOSTOLIC CHURCH HAVE THAT THE MODERN CHURCH DOES NOT HAVE?

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with me. Rev. 3: 20

Jesus stands at the door of the Church of Laodicea and knocks. They are so busy inside. They are singing, praying and sharing testimonies about how Jesus is wonderful. They think they have Jesus inside the Church, yet, the starch truth is:Jesus is outside, locked out of His Church. He knocks at the door and no one seems to hear the knock. The congregation is praying, praising Him but He is not in their hearts. Their hearts are full of envy, hatred, jealousy. They look saved outside but inside they are lost because the only One who could energize them, revitalize them is standing outside the Church. Jesus cannot live in a heart that harbors all filthy things.

Victor Hugo, a French writer of 18th Century, tells the story, in his satirical book, about Jesus' visit to Vatican City. He and his disciples, at the end of a wearisome day, converged to Vatican City hoping to find a place to rest and sleep. The Swiss guard at the gate asks, "Who are you?". "I am Jesus Christ and these are my disciples", replied the man in a long robe and with feet covered with dust. The Guard sends a message to the Pope who, together with his cardinals are gathered for vespers. They are busy praying to Jesus. The messenger comes back to inform the hospitality seekers that the Pope is busy praying. The gate closed on their noses, Jesus and His disciples go to find a hospitality at another place. Jesus is denied hospitality by the person who calls himself the vicar of Jesus Christ on earth. It seems easy to say such words about another church. What about my church - the Seventh-day Adventist Church? Have we let Him in? The truth of the matter is that He is standing at the door waiting for us to open, yet fool ourselves that we have Him in our hearts, homes and churches.

The Apostolic church was strong because it had Jesus. Jesus was at the center of their relationships and worship. This is the reason why Peter was able to say to a crippled beggar, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Acts 3:6-8

The upper room experience is needed today in our church. We need to crave for the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is coming soon. It's time to check and see that Jesus is not locked out of our hearts, homes, churches and places of work. The Holy Spirit will be poured upon those who have welcomed Jesus in their hearts, homes, churches and places of work.

Genuine miracles will be performed by men and women, young and old, who will completely yield their lives to Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to work through them. When we surrender our lives to God, there is no limit to what He man choose to do through us to advance His kingdom. Now is the time and not tomorrow!

THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION ASKED ON 9/01/2008

A question was asked to tell the years which have elapsed since the time Jesus has entered the Most Holy Compartment of the Heavenly Sanctuary. The spirit of prophecy tells us that Jesus inaugurated His ministry of intercession in our behalf in the Most Holy place on October 22, 1844.
If we subtract 1844 from 2008 we get 164 years. We know the time that has elapsed but we do not know the time left for Jesus to wrap up His ministry of intercession. The truth of the matter is that the time left is short. The door of probation which has been open for 164 years is about to close on us. Are you ready to meet Jesus when He appears in the clouds of heaven? Very soon, I don't exactly when Jesus, at the close of the last phase of His redemptive ministry, is going to pronounce words recorded in Revelation 22:11, "Let him who does wrong continue to do wrong; let him who is vile continue to be vile; let him who does right continue to do right; and let him who is holy continue to be holy." The question is, "Where will you be when these words will be uttered? On God's side or on Satan's? I hope you will be on God's side who promises you everlasting life and not on Satan's who promises you nothing but everlasting damnation.

Protestantism at Half Staff

Reflections on Papacy and Protestantism at the death of John Paul II

Larry Kirkpatrick

Preached at Mentone Seventh-day Adventist Church and first Published on GreatControversy.org on April 9, 2005.

We are witness this week to the passing of a man who will doubtless be recalled as one of the last and foremost figures of history. The Papal reign of John Paul II had much to do with raising the profile of Roman Catholicism in an age in which many would think it unexpected. He played a critical roll in the collapse of the Soviet Union, transforming our world into one dominated by a mono-poled superpower—the very superpower predicted by prophecy to one day “exerciseth all the power of the first beast [The Papacy] before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed” (Revelation 13:12), and will soon say “to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads” (Revelation 13:14-16). Yes. And the leader of this lone superpower flew Air Force One to Rome this week.

Never before has an American President attended a papal funeral. The office of the pope at which formerly kings trembled and waited sometimes even barefoot in the snow, is returning to its former glories. Just a few short hours ago the chief dignitaries and heads of state of planet earth gathered in Rome for a funeral, the likes of which, again, this planet has never seen, indeed, this universe has never seen.

This nation founded on the principles of republicanism (representational government) and Protestantism (religious liberty), by executive order lowered her government flags to half-staff “As a mark of respect for His Holiness Pope John Paul II.” The march of prophetic fulfillment continues apace, and all the world is on its way to wondering after the beast. This week past has been one long Roman Catholic television commercial, and the next promises the same. Events like this, currently in process, allow us to take a temperature, to try to read the prophetic odometer.

We make no judgment concerning the pope’s ultimate salvation. He stood for many things with which we will readily agree. We cannot read his heart. His understanding of his position and of the claims made by the Papacy is not ours to measure. Because of Christian charity we are more than ready to grant him his sincerity.

Again, we can mourn with those who mourn, we can realize that for Roman Catholics around the world, the event is a one of sadness and sorrow. They have lost their leader whom they have been taught to look to. We can sympathize with these people, living up to all the light they have, who naturally mourn this loss.

However, as heirs of the Protestant Reformation launched 500 years past, we insist on holding the Papacy responsible for its teachings and actions. Bloody footprints track the hemoglobin of martyrs to the door of the Roman Catholic Church. We know the testimony of prophecy. This Papal power will one day soon return to her former persecutions. She will again compel consciences. She will again torture and maim those who hold to the Bible and who disagree with her corrupt dogmas.

If Protestants are ready to lower their flags to half staff in obeisance to the Papal power now, what will they do under threat of death decree?

In the Place of Christ?

But let us study God’s Word. Who—biblically—is the head of the church? Colossians 1:17, 18 answers. “And He [Jesus Christ] is before all things, and by Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church: Who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things He might have the preeminence.”

But the Pope is called the Vicar of Christ. A dictionary definition of “vicar” is, “one deputed or authorized to perform the functions of another; a substitute in office; a deputy.” In fact, the papacy teaches concerning this vicar, this head of the church, that (we quote the current Catechism of the Catholic Church, hereafter CCC):

CCC100 The task of interpreting the Word of God authentically has been entrusted solely to the Magisterium of the Church, that is, to the Pope and to the bishops in communion with him.
CCC 862 …The Church teaches that ‘the bishops have by divine instruction taken the place of the apostles as pastors of the Church, in such wise that whoever listens to them is listening to Christ and whoever despises them despises Christ and Him who sent Christ.’
CCC 869 …Christ governs her [the church] through Peter and the other apostles, who are present in their successors, the Pope and the college of bishops.
CCC 882 …The Roman Pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire church, has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power that he can always exercise unhindered.
CCC 984 …The risen Christ entrusted to the apostles the power to forgive sins when He gave them the Holy Spirit.

Here then is a power claiming exclusive final authority to interpret Scripture, that failure to listen to them is failure to listen to Christ and is despising Christ Himself, that a man is in the place of Christ, having power over all churches, even to the place where he may—blasphemy of blasphemies—forgive sins. He thinks he is the head of the church. But what does Daniel say?

I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things (Daniel 7:8).

The foremost features of a head are eyes and mouth. These are the chief facial features for reception and origination of language. You have to have a mouth to speak great things. The head of the church is Christ. But Rome claims that the pope is Christ’s Vicar, His deputy, His substitute on earth. What other falsehoods has that church told the world?

In the Place of the Holy Spirit?

Turn now with me to the gospel of John, chapter 14:26 and see. The Pope is a Usurper, for the role of supreme teacher was given by Jesus not to any man, but to the Holy Spirit:

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you (John 14:26).

Again,

Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth (John 16:13).

Our Lord promised that this infallible teacher would abide with us forever:

And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever (John 14:16).

The pope has assumed a position reserved for the Holy Spirit of God.

Christ is the Head of the Church. The Holy Spirit is the one sent to take His place on earth, and no man. How plainly we see that the pope is a false figure, a religious predator, a taker of what is not his own, a teacher of untruth rather than truth, and a false head, a leader astray. In our day of political correctness we may be blind, but hear now the clarion warning of Reformers of centuries past…

Voice of a Great Cloud of Witnesses

Hear the Protestant Reformers:

John Wycliffe:

The Pope of Rome, he is the very Antichrist and not Christ's vicar on earth.” (De Papa; A. Pope or Antichrist?; Wycliffe, Selected English Writings, pp. 70-72).

Martin Luther:

It was in the year 1517, when the profligate monk Tetzel, a worthy servant of the Pope and the Devil—for I am satisfied that the Pope is the agent of the Devil on earth—came among us selling indulgences, maintaining their efficacy, and impudently practising on the credulity of the people. When I beheld this unholy and detestable traffic taking place in open day, and thereby sanctioning and encouraging the most villainous crimes, I could not, although I was then a young Doctor in Divinity, refrain from protesting against it in the strongest manner, not only as directly contrary to the Scriptures, but as opposed to the canons of the Church.

John Calvin:

Some persons think us too severe and censorious when we call the Roman pontiff Antichrist. But those who are of this opinion do not consider that they bring the same charge of presumption against Paul himself, after whom we speak and whose language we adopt… I shall briefly show that (Paul’s words in 2 Thessalonians 2) are not capable of any other interpretation than that which applies them to the Papacy (John Calvin, Institutes).

John Wesley:

He is in an emphatical sense, the Man of Sin, as he increases all manner of sin above measure. And he is, too, properly styled the Son of Perdition, as he has caused the death of numberless multitudes, both of his opposers and followers… He it is … that exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped … claiming the highest power, and highest honor … claiming the prerogatives which belong to God alone (from “Antichrist and His Ten Kingdoms,” John Wesley, p. 110).

Many of these wrote while the faith of martyrs kindled still the smoke of burning pyres. The work of murder yet fresh. They wrote the truth. It is hard for us to hear them, for we live in, and are the product of, a flabby and superficial age.

One person on the internet, referring to citations like those above, made this observation:

It takes time and courage to study the doctrines of Rome but the more you dig into the error the more you see how antichristian it is. This system has never been able to answer such a simple question: What must I do to be saved? Instead it darkened the truth behind a cloud of sacrifices, indulgences, countless intercessors and other substitutes of the Gospel of Christ. The Roman Church has truly changed since the times of these brave man of God. She has become sweet and seductive as a prosti____ to attract compromisers (Maclej Bialy, July 6, 2004).

And the Testimony of the Spirit of Prophecy

Powerful though those men of God cited were, none manifested the Spirit of Prophecy. After the book of Revelation was given about 100 A.D., the voice of the prophet is not heard until we come down to the Advent Movement, and then Ellen White. God spoke to man again. Through the pen of Ellen White, the following was given to those who would believe:

The church that holds to the word of God is irreconcilably separated from Rome. Protestants were once thus apart from this great church of apostasy, but they have approached more nearly to her, and are still in the path of reconciliation to the Church of Rome. Rome never changes. Her principles have not altered in the least. She has not lessened the breach between herself and Protestants; they have done all the advancing. But what does this argue for the Protestantism of this day? It is the rejection of Bible truth which makes men approach to infidelity. It is a backsliding church that lessens the distance between itself and the Papacy.

It is souls like Luther, Cranmer, Ridley, Hooper, and the thousands of noble men who were martyrs for the truth’s sake, who are the true Protestants. They stood as faithful sentinels of truth, declaring that Protestantism is incapable of union with Romanism, but must be as far separated from the principles of the Papacy as is the east from the west. Such advocates of truth could no more harmonize with ‘the man of sin’ than could Christ and his apostles. In earlier ages the righteous felt that it was impossible to affiliate with Rome, and, though their antagonism to this system of error was maintained at risk of property and life, yet they had courage to maintain their separation, and manfully struggled for the truth. Bible truth was dearer to them than wealth, honor, or even life itself. They could not endure to see the truth buried under a mass of superstition and lying sophistry. They took the word of God in their hands, and raised the standard of truth before the people, boldly declaring that which God had revealed unto them through diligent searching of the Bible. They died the cruelest of deaths for their fidelity to God, but by their blood they purchased for us liberties and privileges that many who claim to be Protestants are easily yielding up to the power of evil. But shall we yield up these dearly bought privileges? …The Protestant world seems to be asleep. Protestants are losing the mark of distinction that distinguished them from the world, and they are lessening the distance between themselves and the Roman power. They have turned away their ears from hearing the truth; they have been unwilling to accept light which God shed upon their pathway, and are therefore going into darkness (Signs of the Times, February 19, 1894).

Let’s summarize some of that…

  1. The church that holds to the word of God is irreconcilably separated from Rome.
  2. Protestants are retreating to Rome in anticipation of reconciliation with her.
  3. Rome never changes.
  4. All the rapproachment with Rome is on the Protestant end.
  5. Bible truth rejected means movement toward even more unfaithfulness.
  6. True Protestants declare that union with Rome is impossible.
  7. In Roman Catholicism, truth is buried “under a mass of superstition and lying sophistry.”
  8. Those who remained faithful did so only “through diligent searching of the Bible.”
  9. At the cost of their lives they purchased for us liberties and privileges many today are cheaply surrendering.
  10. Protestantism a century ago was declared to be “going into darkness.”

The testimony of history is telling. The testimony of inspiration is grim. The testimony of this past week should give us renewed clarity about where we stand on the prophetic odometer.

A telling episode from a millennium ago helps us understand the Papacy, a duel between Emperer Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII. In 1076 the Pope made this declaration:

O blessed Peter, prince of the Apostles, by thy favor, not by any works of mine, I believe that it is and has been thy will, that the Christian people especially committed to thee should render obedience to me thy especially constituted representative. To me is given by thy grace the power of binding and loosing in Heaven and upon earth. Wherefore, relying upon this commission, and for the honor and defense of thy Church, in the name of Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, through the power and authority, I deprive King Henry, son of the emperor Henry, who has rebelled against thy Church with unheard-of-audacity, of the government over the whole kingdom of Germany and Italy, and I release all Christian men from the allegiance which they have sworn or may swear to him, and I forbid anyone to serve him as king. I bind him in the bonds of anathema in thy stead and I bind him thus as commissioned by thee, that the nations may know and be convinced that thou art Peter and that upon thy rock the son of the living God has built his Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Hist 151, Barefoot in the Snow, Canossa, 1077, http://instruct1.cit.cornell.edu/courses/hist151-pohl-old/October18.pdf).

In 1077 Henry IV, the Emperor of Germany was compelled by the above declaration of anathema to seek the forgiveness of the pope. Henry was dressed as a penitent and stood barefoot in the snow for three days outside the Castle of Canossa where Pope Gregory was quartered until granted audience and forgiveness by Gregory VII. After this event, he said in many of his letters that it was his duty “to pull down the pride of kings.”

Neither George Bush nor any other world leader who attended the Papal funeral was forced to stand outside in the snow. But to see the president of the United States bowing and before the deceased body of the man who represents antichrist is a bitter sight. All the accolades of Protestants mark the fact that we are in a new day, and Christendom labors under the illusion that Rome has changed. Truly, Protestantism is at half staff this day. It utters no protest but rather pays homage to the office of antichrist.

Who is in Communion With Rome?

The Roman Catholic Church wants all churches to come under her authority, to be in communion with her. Are we in communion with her? Consider these teachings:

CCC 1035 The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell where they suffer the punishments of hell, ’eternal fire.’”

Do you affirm the existence of hell and its eternity? Do you hold that immediately after death the lost descend into hell for punishment in eternal fire? If you do not, you cannot be in communion with Rome.

CCC 1378 Worship of the Eucharist. In the liturgy of the Mass we express our faith in the real presence of Christ under the species of the bread and wine by, among other ways, genuflecting or bowing deeply as a sign of adoration of the Lord.”

Are you ready to take the papal wafer from the hand of the priest to your tongue? Are you ready to bow before that bread first in worship of it? If you are not, you cannot be in communion with Rome.

CCC 1393 ...The Eucharist cannot unite us to Christ without at the same time cleansing us from past sins and preserving us from future sins.... Because I always sin, I should always have a remedy.

Again, the Mass makes the Eucharist your magic pill. Upon the utterance of the priest “hic est enim corpus meum” the bread is transformed into the body of Christ. If you cannot accept this, you are not in communion with Rome.

CCC 1477 This treasury includes as well the prayers and good works of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They are truly immense, unfathomable, and even pristine in their value before God. In the treasury, too, are the prayers and good works of all the saints, all those who have followed in the footsteps of Christ the Lord and by their grace made their lives holy and carried out the mission of the Father entrusted to them. In this way they attained their own salvation and at the same time cooperated in saving their brothers in the unity of the Mystical Body.

And

CCC 2027 …Moved by the Holy Spirit, we can merit for ourselves and for others all the graces needed to attain eternal life, as well as necessary temporal goods.

If you refuse to believe in the treasury of the saints, that men (besides Christ) may merit salvation, that some may produce such great merit that the overflow can be shared with others, you cannot be in communion with Rome.

CCC 2175 For Christians its [Sunday] ceremonial observance replaces that of the Sabbath.
CCC 2188 In respecting religious liberty and the common good of all, Christians should seek recognition of Sundays and the Church’s holy days as legal holidays.

Are you ready to accept that the Roman Catholic Church has—legitimately—transferred the Sabbath observance to Sunday? That Sunday observance should be legislated? If not, you cannot be in communion with Rome.

Nor have we here addressed such teachings as Purgatory, Confession to a priest, indulgences, praying to Mary, and a thousand even more abominable teachings than these. Friends, I declare to you this day, I am not in communion with Rome. We are not in communion with Rome. Her teachings do not harmonize with the Bible. They are the teachings of antichrist, the man of sin, the wh___ and prosti____ foretold in the Revelation.(words left incomplete in order to prevent internet search engines from blocking this page).

The president has no business in Rome nor do we. If Protestants are ready to fly their flags at half staff for the antichrist, we cannot. Hundreds of millions of honest-hearted, converted, truly Christian Roman Catholic people living up to all the light they have may hold to these teachings. But where are God’s own, ready to take the truth to them and help them see it?

Conclusion

Think, my friends. What is next on the satanic agenda? Coming at us in swift darkness is the compulsion of conscience again. Just as fast as Protestantism is going into darkness, just so fast we may be assured a movement for the observance of Sunday is occurring in the darkness. And after, the mark of the beast. In that day those whom we have been slow to warn will be at risk of wondering after the beast. Even this past week we have been under the shadow of this training.

We cannot hide our colors. We are unalterably opposed to the teachings of the Papacy. We are irremediably out of communion with Rome, for Rome is irremediably out of communion with the teachings of God’s Word. Let us never forget what we stand for and what we are. Though seemingly all Protestantism flies its flag at half staff in this our day, the truth remains. God calls us to be faithful sentinels. May He grant us strength to resist every inroad. May He strengthen us to stand in our day as Daniel’s three friends stood in theirs (Daniel chapter three). Surely a curse rests upon any church institution that voluntarily flies its flag at half staff for the antichrist and does not repent. God grant us unbending knees no matter what comes. May this be our prayer as followers of Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Amen. GCO

THE COMING OF JESUS CHRIST WILL SURPRISE MANY

Speaking about the days of His coming, Jesus borrowed the analogy of the days of Noah and Lot saying,
"And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: "They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.
"Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.
Even so  will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed."  Luke 17:26-30

On the eve of the appearing of Jesus Christ, life will be following its normal course.  People will continue to be  busy, going about their daily business as usual.  People will be traveling, business conferences will be held here and there, peace talks between belligerents will take place in different world capital cities, kids will be going to school, pastors and priests will officiate marriages, buildings will be mushrooming up, parliamentary and presidential elections will be held in different parts of the world seeking who among the contenders would deliver what the world needs most: peace and economic stability.  Those whose focus will be on world things will be taken by surprise by the coming of the Lord whereas those whose focus will be on the heavenly things will shout "Halleluya", Jesus is coming!   Where will you be and what will you be doing on the eve of Jesus Christ's return to the planet-earth?

In Genesis 8:22, it says that while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.  The Lord in His mercy will interrupt all this and come to put an end to the misery and suffering brought by sin.  Let us live and do everything in anticipation of this marvelous and great world event: the imminent coming of the Lord.  This is the time to get ready.

From The Pastor’s desk:

Have you noticed how hectic and fast paced life is becoming? Even driving a car has become an opportunity to multitask-dead time that can be used for reading, making phone calls, eating lunch, or even watching TV! This hurried life is one of the signs of the last days. When we are always in a hurry, we may feel important, but it will also prevent us from looking closely at Jesus. Why not slow down, spend time with Jesus and seek Him first in your life? Why not spend, not just quality time, but quantity time with God? I would like to suggest that we ruthlessly eliminate hurry so that we can wait upon the Lord.

Everything crowds in our daily lives and unfortunately God is crowded out. We do not have time for God, yet we do have time for trivial things, things of less value.

Reflect on this during this coming week.

WHAT IS TRUTH?

During the month of August 2008, a question was posted on the blog: “One Mile Away From Eternity.” The question was drawn from a statement which read, “Let’s say that a cow’s tail is a leg. How many legs does a cow have?” The truth is that a cow was created with four legs. It can never have five legs. Truth is not what all that people call truth. Truth is what God says is truth and no man whoever can change it to mean something else. We have to be careful about what people nowadays call truth. We are to examine everything in the light of the Bible which is God’s inspired Eternal Word.

1. God’s law is truth– Psalms Ps 119:142-160

V.142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your law is truth.
V.143 Trouble and anguish have overtaken me, yet Your commandments are my delights.
V.144 The righteousness of Your testimonies is everlasting; Give me understanding, and I shall
live...
v.151 You are near , O Lord, and all Your commandments are truth.
v.152 Concerning Your testimonies, I have known of old that You have founded them forever...
v.160 The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures
forever.

2. Jesus is truth – John 14:6

v.6 I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

3. The Holy Spirit - John 14:17

v.17 The Spirit of truth , whom the world cannot receive, because it never sees Him nor
knows Him; but you know Him , for He dwells with you and will be in you.

4. God's Word - John 17:17, 19

v.17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth...
v.19 And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

5. Gospel - Galatians 2:5, 14

v.5 ...to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might
continue with you.
v.14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to
Peter before them all, if you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the
Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews?

Therefore let us all walk in God’s truth, for God’s truth will set us free indeed from the snares and shrewdness of Satan. The only truth is according to God in His Word and not according to people in their creed. Remember that in the last days many false prophets and false Christs shall arise and will seek to deceive even the elect. Now is high time that the pilgrims be grounded and anchored in God’s truth. Amen

From The Pastor's Desk

What is your dream? I'm talking about the dream that you live and work for every day? Right now there are some trying to become the next president of the United States, and there are some trying to become billionaires. Yet, each of these men and women, will one day have to be laid down into a cold hole in the ground. They will take nothing with them. All we sweat for here on earth is worthless when it comes to our last breath. Except, to seek God with all our heart. Will your age come to an end, or are you seriously looking for a better land?

LET US MEET AT THE CROSS

"Come to Me, says Jesus, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will
find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30

Let us all take our burdens to Jesus at the cross. He is the only one who can give us genuine and lasting rest.

TIME FOR DEEP AND GENUINE CONVERSION

Unconverted people will not make it to heaven. The period of grace that has been extended to each one of us is now while we are still breathing, is now when we can pray and repair, through the power of the Holy Spirit, the breach in our both vertical and horizontal relationships . The time of waiting is crucial for all pilgrims. We need to sit down and unselfishly examine where we stand in our faith. Empowered by the Holy Spirit we need to evaluate or assess the progress accomplished on our heavenly-bound journey. We should not brush aside criticisms and admonitions from the pulpit. Remember that God must send us the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers...Malachi 4:5.

My favorite spiritual writer puts it this way: "There are persons in the church who are not converted, and who will not unite in earnest, prevailing prayer. We must enter upon the work individually. We must pray more, and talk less. Iniquity abounds, and the people must be taught not to be satisfied with a form of godliness without the spirit and power. If we are intent upon searching our own hearts, putting away our sins, and correcting our evil tendencies, our souls will not be lifted up unto vanity; we shall be distrustful of ourselves, having an abiding sense that our sufficiency is of God." SM, Book I, page 122, para#2.

Alluding to this kind of genuine conversion, Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3:3 that no man can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. We need to learn how to live in heaven while we are still here on earth. Our characters must change here on planet -earth before crossing over into celestial Canaan. Let us all avail ourselves greatly and efficiently of the opportunity before us now before the door of probation closes on us forever. Remember if we are not born again through the Holy Spirit we will not make it to heaven. God will not allow unconverted souls in His heavenly courts because they would be a fatal liability to all what heaven means. If you really want to go to heaven you are invited to introspectively examine yourself and see whether or not you are converted. If you are not it is time to do something while the door of probation is still open. But how long will it stay open? Hurry up! Time is running out. We are just ONE MILE AWAY FROM ETERNITY.

A veteran Seventh-day Adventist religious freedom advocate announced last month that he has accepted the top staff post of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.

James D. Standish, Esq., director of Legislative Affairs at the Seventh-day Adventist Church world headquarters for the past seven years, will now serve as executive director of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, an independent non-partisan federal agency advising the White House and Congress.

"The Commission warmly welcomes James Standish," Commission chair Felice D. Gaer said, calling him a "respected leader" both on Capitol Hill and among the constituencies he has represented.

"Mr. Standish brings to the commission critical experience in both grassroots advocacy and a publication history that speaks to his impressive, non-partisan ability to approach issues of religious freedom from a political, legal and theoretical perspective," Gaer said.

Standish called joining the Commission "an honor," particularly given the upcoming tenth anniversary of the International Religious Freedom Act. The 1998 law created the Commission, which monitors violations of right to freedom of thought, conscious and religion or belief abroad and provides independence policy recommendations to the President, Secretary of State and Congress.

"The magnitude and severity of violations of the universal right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion worldwide cannot be understated," Standish said.

Standish is widely published, has discussed religious freedom issues on nationally broadcast television and radio and has testified on religious freedom matters before the U.S. House of Representatives, most recently in February, when he spoke in support of the Workplace Religious Freedom Act.

Standish's new job "shows how the work of our department has had a very positive influence in recent years," said John Graz, director of Public Affairs and Religious Liberty for the Adventist world church. Graz said Standish has "done an outstanding work in Washington, D.C.," and would "continue to lift up religious freedom" at the Commission.

Standish received his undergraduate degree from Adventist-owned Newbold College in England, an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia and a J.D. from Georgetown University. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar and has been admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and the Fourth Circuit.

Standish joins nine Congressional and Presidential appointees currently serving on the Commission.
